WIP Wednesday

I have been adding a white frame around the rainbow blocks that I had on my design wall. I plan to add the dark green fabric next in the same fashion that was done on This Quilt but she used grey. I just really dislike grey and hate to use it. So I will use Avocado Kona Cotton instead.  After I get this done I am planning to work on my blue scrapes again for Scrap Saturday.

I have been machine quilting lots this week. Here in Alberta we are having a heat wave and no AC in the house so the basement is the best place to be, working in my sewing studio. I think many other Alberta quilters are sewing too. I have had so many calls the past two days about doing machine quilting for them. Good, more work to keep me out of trouble.

This quilt is one of my customers that would like to remain unnamed. I am very happy how it has come out. I will be delivering it back to her this week and picking up the next two quilts she has for me to do. Yes, I sometimes pick up and deliver quilts.

Last night I had a Dog Agility Trial. It was an evening trial with just two runs. Talk about Hot. We did not pass the steeple chase class but we passed our Starter Jumpers. My dog was very good but had the one time were he visited the timer and scribe. What a friendly dog.

Design Wall Monday July 9th

Not much quilting the last few days, but I did put these blocks up to see how they were looking. I am loving it. I will have to wait another three weeks to see what colour we are using next in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2012. This month we are working on our blue scraps. I have lots still to do with blue and may need a new project as there are so many blue scraps.

I really like these two blocks and the blue pin wheels I made this past week.

Today I am to finish machine quilting this little beauty. I am close to being done and then I can move on to the next quilt. The next one is very big with lots of feather work so I will be a while with it. 

I have some rose buds opening up. This is a short rose that does not need to be staked and is in the rocks behind my water fall. Just glad I do not need to weed around this thorny rose. It has big thorns and would be hard to get under it.

Summer Cleaning

Chained to Colour - First real scrap quilt finished in 1999. 

This weekend  I washed then dried my large bed quilt in the sunshine. I think it dried better outside than my old dryer could have done. The quilt is on the patio table and the back of two chairs making it look like a bed with pillows. It dried in just a couple hours. I washed a quilt for each of the boys too.

We are redoing our bedroom and cleaning it out. We bought a king size bed and needed to move out the old and clean for the new. My husband and I took turns with the vacuum. He would be upset if he knew I took this photo let a lone post it for all to see.

Green and Blue quilt is from my mom, made about 1999. 

I took some photos of my large quilt rack. I got this some years ago from old quilt friend down sizing.

It is taller then normal so you do not need to fold the quilts as many times. Great for show quilts and large wall hangings. I try not to fold them or change how I fold them often. I try not to fold in half down the centre because everyone else folds down the centre and that is the line the quilts will wear out first.

I spotted this under the pile. I forgot I had it. It can from the same lady I got the rack from. It is hand sewn and old. I will have to get a full shot photo someday. I have never taken any photos of it. Hexies.

Look! Our new Bed with new sheets and freshly washed Quilt. And the room is really clean too. Now I know why a person should do spring cleaning - cleaning in the heat is not fun. Note for next time do this kind of job in April or early May. Better yet, do it in January when you just can not warm up (maybe not drying quilts outside).

Saturday Scrappy Blues

Scrappy Saturday this month, we work on the blue scraps. I love blue. I have lots of blue scraps. If I was to make a two colour quilt it would need to be blue. I just love these little blue pin wheels.  I got digging in some real old fabric for these blocks. Some of the navy and the real light coloured blues are from back when I worked at a fabric store in Leduc, maybe 15 years ago.

I used some of the smallest bits in the centre block. I just sewed some light coloured to light and dark to dark and then jointed the little rows together. I really did not plan it. To see more on this quilt you can go back to this post.

I did not have internet for a few days this week. We had real bad winds. This is one of three trees that came down on my drive way. My husband was away and I had to get a neighbour help move the trees. We also have a building to repair as the winds blow out a wall to our horse shelter.

These are the wild roses on the drive way. We have hundreds lining the drive way. Sometimes you have to stop and smell the roses.

Little Quilt for Brody

I got the quilting done for my customer Pat. Her grandson was born early and she was in a rush to get the little quilt done for Brody.

Some of the blocks had hand work on them. I quilted free motion so that I could stay off the hand work.

WIP Wednesday Work In Progress

I have linked up to Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday on this 4th of July. Happy Independence Day to my American friends and family. Yes I have cousins that are Americans. As a Canadian I have added this to Needle and Thread Net Work.

I am working on more blocks for my RRCB quilt. I have decided to make it larger and I need more blocks.

My stack of blocks so far. I have changed the colour to some of my favourite colours.

I hope to get the coloured blocks done this week and maybe next week attack the string blocks I need.

I also got this little triangle scrap quilt sew together. It is now a quilt top and off the design wall. I will have to squeeze in some time and see if I can get it quilted this week too. I have ton of machine quilting to do for customers. I need to keep on track. Maybe stay off the internet after I check out what the other WIP quilter`s are doing.

Roses in Bloom

I got this rose about 14 years ago and moved it to this spot about 12 years ago, from our old house. It just keeps getting bigger. I have never trimmed it. I have about four more rose plants growing in behind the spruce tree. If the rain does not beat it up to much it will bloom for weeks. The bees go crazy for it and it has lots of thorns but it never has any winter kill. We get cold here and most other roses I have get some kind of winter kill and needs to be trimmed.

I was given the rose from my husbands co-worker. His grandfather was moving out of his home and he was a rose breeder. The new owner of the house was planning to plow the roses under. He worked on roses for the Alberta winter. He crossed some with our wild roses. This is the same colour but has more petals and is a much larger blossom.

The white rose is also from the same older man. It has not done as well but it is in a dryer spot. The grass also keep getting in and around the plant. This one is not as showy but it smells so sweet. Do you see the thorns by the millions? 

Horses on the Weekend

Here is Adam riding Honey. She is so good for the kids to ride. She can be as sweet as Honey.

After taking this photo I got Adam's stirrups lowered a hole. I guess he is growing.

My dad on his horse. Not sure what was bugging him. Maybe just that he had to work. This was the best of a couple of photos.

Lex was helping this weekend by carrying the recycling to the bin. He is very talented and can carry two paper rolls at a time.

Design Wall Monday July 2nd

I have been playing around with some triangles. This first one is a set of triangles I had left over from a project many years ago. The light is a off white fabric maybe a bleached muslin. Not sure I like it. Soo

I got out the boxes of scraps and cut and sewed some triangles. Still playing around.

I added more colours.

Changed the layout more.

Here I have refined the plan a little more. I have the measuring tape on the side. You can see this is not big. I need a little mat for my side table and this is about the size I need. Now to sew it up.

I also sewed some blue strips together as this month the Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour is Blue.

Happy Canada Day

Happy Canada Day, Canada turns 145 years young today. This is the old barn that moved in next door this past week. The neighbours, standing in front, had a property with this barn and in selling the property they had to destroy the barn or move it, so they moved it. With the added roofs on the side, it measured 60 feet wide.  The barn has a new roof and the front has metal siding.

The side view shows the age of the barn better. See how some of the bracing went though the barn. I guess the old barn was set up for horses with stalls and automatic water bowls. They are talking about taking some of the stall out but may get horses and leaves a few stalls.
