Saturday Purples

I got some of my Purple honey comb blocks done this week, 2 blue/purple and 3 lilac blocks. 

I have not sewn the top and bottom together yet. It is better to leave them like this and sew the quilt top together in rows of half blocks.

I worked hard at cutting and sorting my purples this week. A tray of sorted and trimmed up squares and a few triangles at the top. I have 2" squares, 2 1/2" squares and then some 3" squares. I have a few different projects planning that will use these sizes. The sampler blocks over at Soscrappy can be done mostly from this tray. I did blue blocks that were 10" finished and used the 2 1/2" squares and triangles. I might also make a smaller size too. 

This is the main box of purple. Well sorted and looking pretty tidy. 

The bits a pieces that do not fit anywhere. I will use this stack to start a few crumb blocks later in the month. 

Scraps Everywhere

I started my scrap busting this week with an over flowing box of mixed up scraps. I had rushed my cleaning back in December and all scrappy bits were dumped in this box. I had added to it a few times, to the point I could not close the lid and parts were falling out. It was getting in the way. 

This week I sorted it all by colour and put each bit in the colour box. I am more ready for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018 now.

In the scrap box there was a stack of 2 1/2" squares and triangles, in medium to light blue. So in the very last days of January, I used them to make the sampler blocks in the 10" size. You can find out more about it at Sampler 2018 at Soscrappy. There are a few different sizes that could be done. I still might do a smaller size block too. 

The block name for January is Red Cross. I will say I really thought about doing the center in Red. My Grandmother sometimes knitted for the Red Cross. I might go back and make one Red Cross in red. 

 I used some 30 prints to make this one. Most of the lighter blues I have are 30 prints or sky colour. 

I got 3 blocks done before the end of Janaury. Now on to February and the new colour is ....

Purple

I love purple. 

So I got the 4 rows on the left sewn together yesterday. The 4 rows over on the right were done back in December as part of the getting some stray colours done. I am planning to use these strips to make Honey Comb blocks. Now I can cut out the hexagon parts I need for each block. 

Now to go sew more purple scraps into something fun. I think I will check out the new sampler block for February. 

Blue Spiral Log Blocks

I kept working away on my blue blocks. They are looking good. They can not really go together yet in this photo. They are different sizes on one side. They each need one more strip added to make them square. 

I have added this to the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018 and the link at Soscrappy. 

Lots of 1 1/2 strips of blue fabric is getting used. I had to cut a few more light blues, I was running out. I still have lots of darker blue strips. It also leaves me with short bits at the end. Oh well in the scrap box they go. 

I played with how I might lay them out. I might not do any other colours but just use all the blue ones together. Not sure I like the way the quilt is split in 4 rows. I made all my spirals spin the same way. Not sure what I could have done had I done half one way and half the other spinning way. 

OK love this lay out. The blocks have all the sides added now. I ended up adding one more strip to each block. Half the blocks have 3 dark strips on the outside. and the other half of blocks have 3 sides with Light on the outside. This way they are square blocks and fit together better. I think these would be a cute baby boy quilt. I have the blocks labeled to sew together like this. I have to put this way for a week or so. I must finish something else. 

If I do these again I might have to just make half spin the other way. I will get a different layout.

Blue Log Spirals

This week I got started on some log cabin spirals. I had to use both light and dark but I am making a big dent in the light fabrics. I still have so many dark blues. I was not sure how many blocks to do. 16 started so far. Not sure I will do all colours in this block. Maybe just a two colour quilt? not sure where it is going yet. It is just nice to sit and sew strips. I am using 1 1/2" strips. 

Look at how many different blues end up in the block so far.

This is the block that inspired me. I got this block in the my pizza box exchange. One of my old school friends has joined the guild and is quilting too now. She made this block for me. And I just love the block. 

Look at these scraps. I was told about a local estate sale of fabric. I meet the gentlemen selling his wife's fabric. So sad to go and see fabric loved but not used. Well I bought some fabric and asked to take the scrap box he had. In the scrap box was a careful stack of shot cotton, all labeled with the name of the colour. Oh what a little gem of fabric. Each one has the name I had no idea there were so many shot cottons solids. 

I bought yardage, mostly half yards some smaller. I think these would make some great kids quilts. I might also use some in my Vintage Farm girl quilt. 

Shot cotton yardage I bought. The fabric was not washed and I know I will be washing those reds. They are bleeders for sure. All of the Shot cotton yardage has labels also. She had a very tidy stash.

I am out at another dog trial today. My friend has asked me to come help her with her 3 dogs and would like me to run one of them.  My Gemma still has a broken nail, maybe by the end of February we can play. 

Bionic Gear Bag

I completed my Bionic Gear Bag. Wow it feels like it has been months that I have been working on this. I started one before Christmas and it did not go well for me. I made a major cutting mistake and I could not get the bag to fit together, so I restarted with all new fabric and zippers. I watched so many videos too.

This is Sally's main web page and I also got the Mother Load bag which is the bigger Gear bag with a coupon code. I will have to make it too. I then signed up for the Weekend Warrior projects too. Sally has all kinds of videos on her site. A good handful of the videos are free but you need to sign up for a free membership. To get the bag you need to buy the pattern. 

I did change it a little before I started to sew it together. 

Part way, this is near when I had to stop on the first one. I had cut the pockets too small and could not get the side part to work, too much fabric to get in between the zippers. This is the good bag before the out fabric and before the binding. So far this one is looking good. 

Totally done and ready to put to work. I can put all kinds of sew supplies in my bag to go. Then you open your bag at retreat and use the little tray area to put out the tools your using the most. Yes my seam ripper is there, quick to grab. 

Here is the bag all closed up and ready to travel. I love the fabric I used, so bright and cheery. Later this year I will have to make my mom one of these bags.

Blue Scraps on Saturday

I am playing a long with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018 again this year. I have been working on my boxes of scraps for years now. This month is week 2 of the new year and month. We were told to use up some of our light blue scraps this month. I did not listen real good and started with the super dark blues to make the 3 bottom blocks. Then I moved on to the light bits. 

Some of the pale blues bits. My crumb blocks or poverty piecing blocks are 6 1/2" square. I got a total of 12 done this week. I then looked in my drawer of blocks and I had 20 blue/turquoise blocks already done so now I have 32 blue blocks. I might be making more then one quilt with crumb blocks.

Also this week, not related to Rainbow Scrap Challenge, I got this block finished. I had these hexagons kind of left over and thought I would make a block 12". I sent some flower blocks off in a new pizza box exchange and used these colours Lime for the background. When I get a chance I will add it in my pizza box. We are doing the pizza box exchange again this year at the Leduc quilt guild. 

Bad to the Bone

Bad to the Bone is done. I started to call this project Bad to the Bone right from the start. I was so bad to start a new project and buy an arm load of new fabric when I should not have. I had so many quilts on the go and so many that needed to to be finished and now I was starting something new. 

Then I was bad, I got the top done quickly but did not quilt it for years. Extra bad. 

Outside snow shots are so much fun to do. Maybe a bit cold to do but fun to look back at all the blue white snow and my bright quilts. 

I was so unsure of how I was going to quilt this quilt. It sat for a long time, a finished top but not done. I was very pleased with how the quilting worked out. On the dark stings I did straight lines not measured out so fine but not evenly spaced. Then on the light coloured stings I did curvy shapes and every diamond is different, so lots of different quilting. 

Here the quilt is hanging at the Leduc quilt show back in Oct. Yes it has been done for a few months. I was not blogging much at the time because I was so busy quilting. I had my nose in the fabric and not in the computer.

I know some did some different colours. 

I am far from done. I have 13 blocks done so far. That is not even half yet. I do have all my units done, like the nine patches in the center and All the flying geese.

See lots of units ready for the next step. I even have some rows of units ready for the block. I still have lots to do.

Rail Fence Checkerboard

Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018 has just started. Today is the first day! I had plans to start a few new things. Maybe next week. 

First I must finish something.

I have worked very very hard on this Rail Fence Checkerboard quilt top this past week. I first had to go back to making a few more blocks. I thought I had enough. But no. See all the blank spots at the bottom? 

I needed 6 more blue blocks. I also needed at least 4 more of all the other colours except Purple. 

So I ended today with a few rows starting to get sewed to each other. I am seeing the end soon. I have my rows draped on the long arm rail. These rows are taking forever. I am pinning almost every inch of a 96" row.
