Quilts for Boys

My Mom, Betty, and I often work on quilts together. These two where done by both of us. My mom did the patchwork and I did the machine quilting. I wanted to give my sister in laws two boys a quilt each. I had given them a baby quilt each but no new ones for years. You can see they are way to big now for baby quilts. They needed small man size at least.

This quilt I had an Oiler fabric (Edmonton's Hockey team) on part of the backing so we did make it more orange and blue. Both boys love hockey and their dad is a hockey nut. Some winter's dad has build a ring in their back yard.

Both quilts were done in time for the birthdays they had in Aug 2020. I am behind showing of stuff from last year when I hardly wrote on my blog.

Dog friends - I have not gone to the herding breed yet, the cattle dog is their dog.

Orange Scraps

Here are the Squared Away sampler blocks for the Month of August and the scrap colour Orange. I like how they turned out. Each one looks a little different. On top is the 7 1/2" blocks and the bottom row is the 10" blocks.

Next up are the migrating geese blocks. They look kind of off tilled. I do a odd angle when I took the photo and then tried to fix it with editing. Just looks bad. Trust me they look good in person.

See already better looking.

I have added this post to Soscrappy and her link up party.
The next colour up is Dark Blue, so I just this weekend I will start a chopping and sorting out my Blues.

I now have 16 blocks for a hug quilt. It is a group project and I need to get them in the mail this week. I hope it will tell someone that we care.

Last week we got back from our mountain holiday. My husband took this photo of me. We have climbed on of the higher mountains in the area. You can see we are just above the tree line. There was some light smoke from fires in the area so the other mountains are not real clear. This was about 500 meter above were our camp was. So yes we climbed 500 meters that day. I do not like heights and this was not pleasant for me. I can say I did it but I do not want to do it again. Our dear horses worked so hard. Thank you Jester!

Scrappy Saturday

Back in January 2018, I started the blue spiral log cabin blocks. It was part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018 light blue for Jan. I kept going and got the quilt top done. Later this spring, a friend asked if I had any baby quilts for sale. She found out the baby is a boy so this quilt was going to be perfect. I got the quilt done last month and finished and delivered the quilt.

Here is the quilting with more Spirals.
After the baby is born I am going to add a label.
So happy to hear that there will be a new baby just down the road in a few weeks.

I got a little more Red done from July's colour. These are 6 1/2" crumbs or poverty piecing.

I worked with some Red and Pink scraps for these hearts.
I have 7 more blocks almost done.
 So a total of 14.
I will mail these off for a group hug quilt.

Aug is the scrap challenge colour is Orange.
I have started Bow Ties.
I am using an orange with white dot fabric.
How cute are they?
I will not use any other orange but all the other colours, like these Red ones.

I worked hard on my Orange scraps. I cut and cut and ironed out funky bits.
I have tons of triangle in there. I have 3" square, 2 1/2" sq, 2 "sq and then I needed 2 by 3 1/2" units for some flying geese. Now I can start putting some blocks together. I am sure  will need another few weeks before I can complete all this orange.

I have added this post to Soscrappy and Confessions of a fabric addict.

Chocolate Goodness

Look at all the great chocolate goodness I have used. And it is all calorie free. I used a stack of brown scraps and made long strip sets.

I then cut out my units and got 4 Honey Comb blocks done. I have both Dark Chocolate and Milk Chocolate blocks now.

I have been looking around to see which quilt blocks I might do next year.

Near the bottom and just to the left of center is the Hershey kiss fabric. Also to the right is the truffle chocolates too.

I had the strips done back in Oct but did not get the blocks done on time. Orange was the colour for October so I am a little late. Most important is they got done.

The darker orange fabrics for this block.

The lighter orange fabrics for this block.

Slab Wall Monday

Today on my Design Wall is a good bunch of Slab blocks. The slab block is from Cheryl Arkison's book Sunday Morning Quilts. I am making them for Charity quilts but changed the size to 12 1/2" and added a Canadian fabric to each block. I wrote more about it on Friday's post. I even have one quilt finished with these kind of blocks. So far I have made 109 blocks and hope to have 3 quilts to give away. I will also be handing in some of my extra blocks.

Little orange pumpkin tea pot. Can you see the 2 Canadian fabrics?

This yellow block has a cooking piggy.

I have added today's post to Design Wall Monday over at Judy's blog and Monday Making

Today's post is post #700. I would have never thought I would write 700 little notes about my quilting and  a few things about the rest of my life. I just do not consider myself a writer, but maybe I should call myself a writer after 700.

Design Wall Feb 6

I declared this past weekend a stay at home Retreat of Quilting. It all started on Friday night, I got sewing more slab blocks. Saturday I slept in but spent the day in my sewing room. Sunday the same thing, lots of sewing got done.

Black slab blocks. I am working my way through my boxes of colour sorted scraps. I am planning on sending a quilt for Canada's Big Quilt Bee. If you want to make some here is the Slab pattern. The blocks are 12 1/2" and they ask that we have a piece of Canada fabric. I have been using this White with Red maple leaves, I am running out.

Can you see the other Canadian fabric? is is black with cream maple leaves. I picked it up at retreat, someone else scrap, just one strip. Love my paw prints too.

I just kept sewing all weekend long. I got 6 blocks done in Yellow. Yellow is not really a favorite colour for me but I have collected a few cute yellow fabrics. Like the big dots that go to Red, or the the plaid yellow.

I have decided if I make 6 blocks of each colour that will add up to 48 blocks and I can make 2 quilts. I will have some extra green blocks.

Orange got done too. Can you see I added in a bit of Red maple leave fabric in there?

Pink Saturday

I got some more Wild and Goosey blocks done. The first row of blue were from last month. Then I worked on 8 Pink blocks for the RSC2015. I wanted more blue so, I did a 8 more blue ones too. I  did them all with paper piecing. I do not really think of them done till the paper is out. So yes the paper is out now. Then they stick to the wall too.
I have added today's post to Soscrappy Playing with Pink post and linky party.

Edit: Here is the PDF pattern for the Wild and Goosey

I found these blocks. I made then back in Sept 2014, the colour of the month was Orange back then. I did post about some sampler blocks I did but for some reason I did not get a photo of these blocks. They were out near the design wall but no photos and no post about them. The large spool is 8" sq and the nine patches are 3 1/2" . I have most of the large spools that I wanted to get done. Not sure what I will do with them next. Not sure what I will do with the nine patches.

Saturday Scrap Sewing

Orange is the September Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour for the month. I had sometime today to sew and watch TV. I watched Spruce Meadows Show Jumping, wishing I was there.
I got 6 sampler blocks done. They measure 6 1/2". As we had snow earlier this week it is feeling like fall, so I had to make a leaf block. I happen to quickly find a pattern to follow in my Farmer's Wife Book. So the next 2 and the center bottom one was also from the book. I did a simple 9 patch and the the star made with the triangles on the outside. Wow sounds nice and quick but, it always takes more time with the scraps.

Here is the box of scraps I was working with today. Kind of sorted.
I have added today's post to Soscrappy for more Orange ideas go see.

Friday and Saturday was the Creative Stitches show in Sherwood Park/ Edmonton. I made it again this year, Friday. I did some packet book damage. I bought a few more Kaffe Fassett fabrics again. I was worried about not have enough different colours for my Dear Jane. I was pleased to find 4 very good Oranges and some more Blues, that I did not have before. Some are Fat quarters and some are half meters.  I also got 2 books and a few jewelry findings.

Last Saturday of Yellow Happyness

I have two large blocks done that measure 15 1/2" each.

I have added today's post to Soscrappy's Linky Party

I had a little drawing of improve sunflowers, I did some time back. I thought it was time to try a few. The larger block measures 14" or so. They are kind of cool. I lost one little triangle, the dog eat it off the floor. I had better watch those scraps better.

7 Poverty Piecing 6" square done this week. I am getting a good stack of these blocks. I am only missing the blue ones so far.

Jack in the box blocks. I got three yellow ones and was short a green one so I did it last night. I still am behind and need to make blue ones.

Coins strips. I got the yellow done last night also. I am behind in all other colours this year. I have some pink and blue set a side but not sewn yet. Maybe later next month I will get to them.

Here is the design wall with all this weeks Yellows. I got 15 more spools done this week.

I have done some preparation work for Yellow Hexies but I do not have one flower sewn yet. This is half the work for hexies.

Last Orange Saturday of Scraps

Spring is taking it's time around here so I got making my own Spring Tulips. I found the pattern for it at Bee in my Bonnet, it was the last row of her row by row. I just may have to make the whole quilt. I have made many of the butterflies and I love the apples and cores. These are just so cute.

Next I sewed together some strips in orange. They are 6 1/2" wide. I am thinking they will be great as a boarder on one of these Rainbow quilts.

For more on today's Orange scraps Go see Soscrappy.  And to see more about the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2013.

I made five 6" crumb blocks to go with the others. I have trouble stopping these. I get started and there is always more little bits left that could be one more block. Then one more. Hard to stop.

I still had a little stack of triangles so I made two 8" jack in the box blocks. I am thinking of going back and making a few pink and purple ones too.

I still have a few strips so why not make a few string blocks. I decided to really make them triangles so that I can mix the colours up. I have no idea how I will really use them but they are more useful now. I went back and did some purple triangle strings too. I am not sure what size these are maybe 8" when two are sewn together.

We have so much snow. I am thinking I may have to do some snow dying of fabric this week. The snow was so wet and perfect for snow dying yesterday.

Orange Scrap Saturday

I found sometime to work on the Orange scrap box again this week. I got two flower blocks done. They finish up to be 8" square blocks. When I did purple ones I thought of them as Pansies, not sure I would call these ones pansies or not. Edit - We will call them Poppies as Brenda suggests. Thanks

When you are done reading here, go check out what others have posted over at Soscrappy. We are all working though our scraps for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2013. This month is Orange, January was Pink and Feb was Purple. The other colours of the month are a surprise for each of us. You can join in the fun anytime.

I have 24 butterflies done in orange. I got this pattern over at Bee in My Bonnet. She has been doing a row by row and this was row 2 back in Sept. She has just finished the quilt. I like some of the other patterns and may have to do more. Heck, I may end up making a whole quilt more. I love the apples and cores and the Spring tulips too. There were mittens but we have so much winter I am not sure I want to make mittens.

We got snowed in this week. Thur was a mess and we did not plow out till late on Friday. I got my van stuck on Wed. So we are on a forced long weekend. Spring Break is also this week.

I was surprised how the photos today made my oranges all look the same. So here is a detail so show the details of my prints. I had a number of old orange Jenny Beyer prints because I bought some oranges on clearance 15 years back. I kind of wish I had some of the other colours that never made it one to the clearance shelf.
