WIP Grassy Creek

Wednesday in Progress, WIP, This is where I am at with the Bonnie Hunter mystery quilt. I am just starting step 5 and these little 9 patches. They are cute. I love how my greens and oranges are looking together. I still have the other units to cut for step 5, I only started step 5 on Sunday this week. Yes I am behind, many have their tops done. Slowly I go.

Step 1 is the Yellow triangles, and it was to be grey but my grey is now purple, they are all done and counted. My step 6 all the purple strings is getting closer to be done. I have been kind of using them as leaders and enders, go get the small triangle on the string units. I do not have to thing about it too much.

Oh these steps, 3 and 4. These steps are hard. This is where I am slow. I have lots to still do here. I had to do some redoing. I now have 8 sets that are nice. but I am a long ways yet.

I will have to do some more work on this. Might get a little more done this week on it.

Scrappy Trips Around the World

I got to teach this past week. A good friend of mine offered her home and knew some relatives of her would come for a quilt class. So her sister, mom and aunt, along with 2 friends all came. When we had more room we opened it up and a couple of my friends came too.
She cooked a nice lunch and had scones for snack time.

I have used these blocks to show them how you can change the pattern. I flipped and moved blocks around. Great fun. Now the blocks show 2 trips on the left and the zig zag pattern in the middle to the right. Cool!

So class finished up late on Saturday. Sunday I wanted to sew for myself. I thought it would be good to sew my blocks together. I was slow and got started and still have more to do.
So I hope I can show off my finished quilt top soon.

WIP Wednesday More Hexies

I have been working on my Hexagons. I did a ton of basting and some sewing over the Easter weekend. I have been thinking I like this layout. I am not sure if I have enough green fabric but so far I like this the best. I have no idea how big I will make this quilt.

I thought I would show off this great fabric. I found the crazy vase fabric on clearance. I bought some not know how I would use it. It is perfect to fussy cut. I used a piece of fabric 20" by 28" to get the 6 repeats I needed.

I few more from the same fabric. I am getting more pink around the flowers.

Here is the same print in a different colour. I love the crazy vase flower on the bottom.

WIP Wednesday Hexies

I have been working hard on my Kaffe Fassett Hexagon project. If I have my hexagons all pre-basted, I can sometimes get 3 done in one night. I find the cutting and basting for one can takes just as long as the sewing one flower.

My next step was to pick out a background fabric. I had a meter of this yellow but was not sure.

Then I found this one, Bubble Gum pink Kona cotton. Love it.

I love the fussy cutting I did on this flower. My hexagons are 1" on the side.

Here are a few flowers I have done the pink around.

My crazy little lab. She got to go in the water and now she keeps looking out the window at the lake. I think she will be a swimmer.

OK funny thing I will admit to. You may know I have trouble spelling but the spell check helps. Well my husband found Hamburger soup in the freezer marked Hambugger soup. I keep laughing about it. Bugger soup.

No Wining

So I have been working on my Celtic Solstice Mystery quilt step 1. It is a Bonnie Hunter Mystery quilt. You can find out about it on Quiltville
This photo is from Saturday night. I sewed and was having a few drinks as I sewed. Well it did not go all well. I spilt my Wine. I kind of made a bit of a mess. I reached for my pins and the taller wine glass fell over. It was White, so I just ironed it dry.

I got my Easy Street Quilt top done. This was last years Bonnie Hunter Mystery from last year. I got the top done before I started the next one.
Do you see the one patch I have to fix?

I hope to get it quilted early in the New Year. I am a little busy doing customers Quilts right now.

Here are my Celtic Solstice Mystery patches. So far so good. I am using the black as my Neutral, Blue were Bonnie said Blue and Pink batik were Bonnie has Orange. I just love some of these Batiks. So bright and clear.
Oh Yes, Bonnie has a linky page, to see more Go Here. Others mystery quilters have shown off their work.

WIP what am I doing?

I have been working on my scraps still for the rainbow scrap challenge. Green spools for the month of April and Blue spools for the month of May. June is Yellow I hope to have some to show you soon. Yes I am a little behind. But I am back. The past two months have been crazy busy with lots of Agility, gardening, long arm quilting, just about everything but sewing for me.

Last month the Canadian Quilters Association CQA had a conference and the National Juried show. My quilt Wed Design 1.0, was in the National Juried Show. Here is a photo of me in front of my quilt. Mom and I and friend Liz had a great time at the show, bought lots of new fabric.
I guess I should get some better finished photos someday. I would love to take it outside and do some on location shots but it is raining and is wet again.

This Saturday the Leduc guild is having a Quilt till you wilt day. Should be good fun. Not sure which quilt I will take to work on. Maybe one of the Bonnie Hunter mystery s I have yet to complete.

I have added this post the linky page over at The Needle and Thread Network WIP.

WIP Wednesday

I have been working on my Easy Street mystery quilt this week. I had a UFO sewing day with the Leduc Black Gold Quilt Patch on Monday. I had these blocks done a few months back but I really did not like the Grey four patches and I changed them to pink four patches. Big improvement, I am much happier with the pink.

The wall also has my orange Sprout blocks on the left. On the bottom right is my Around About. Both of these are part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2013 that I have been following along. One the bottom left you can see the red and green project, that is a Christmas table runner I have quilted it but need to trim and bind still. I did not get it done for Christmas but maybe I can get it done in time of one of the guild quilt shows and the next Christmas.

Here is my box of patches that still need to be sewn into blocks. I have all the out triangles done but need to complete 21 more blocks. If you want to see more about the Easy Street Mystery go see the pattern on Bonnie Hunter's Quiltville site. The pattern is only going to be there for a few more weeks, as she will take it down and publish the pattern in her next book.

I have 7 orchid plants flowering now and two more about to pop. This is just one of the plants flowering and it is so perfect today. I hope spring hurries up, it is very much winter here today with blowing snow and drifting. Tonight is the Edmonton guild meeting and I am wondering if I should be out driving in the dark.

Now back to more machine quilting for my customers. I have a few deadlines for quilts this month.

WIP Wednesday

I thought I would show off some great work on my fellow Edmonton and District Quilter's Guild Members. First to show you is Wanda's Fabric basket. Look at the buttons. She is a great collector of old buttons. She has made this to give to a new daughter in law and wanted to use some very special buttons.

This fan quilt is a group raffle quilt. The funds raised will go to the Edmonton Guild Endowment fund. We have been fund raising for a few years now and are able to give two scholarships. The hope to have enough funds for a third graduate scholarship. The quilt was long arm machine quilted by Kim. I forgot to get a book of tickets. Maybe at the next meeting.

WIP Wednesday

I have a fourth block done for my Rainbow Dear Jane. I did traditional piecing for it but had considered some kind of Paper Piecing but there were just to many units.  I think I did pretty good with this block. I was forever measuring and trimming.

I have a few more pink blocks to finish up before the end of the month. Then on the weekend we will see what colour is for February.

I am machine quilting this sampler for a customer. I forget how much sampler take to quilt. Forever changing threads and designs. I hope to get it done soon, it is turning out really nice. So that what I am working on this week.

I have added today's post to Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday and Canadian Needle and Thread Network.

Snow Dying

As we have had a little warm spell and the snow was melting yesterday. I thought I would snow dye some fabric.  I also got the timer to work and took a photo of myself knelling by the fabric.

It was sunny and warm yesterday, just look at the great blue sky we had. No sun today just grey.

I hope this one turns out. I placed the fabric with a spin and have laid out the fabric with a plaid like pattern.

I am off the wash the nine pieces out now.

I have added this to Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday and Needle and Thread Network WIP Wednesday.

WIP Wednesday

I have been machine quilting like crazy the last few days. A couple of the quilts are all the same so I have not taken photos. Yesterday I saw a post to help those affected by Sandy. I did not want to send a whole quilt because of shipping cost but I could make blocks. I found My Patchwork Life who wanted disappearing four patch with floral prints and semi solid fabrics.

So I went digging last night and got started. Here are some four patch units that need the next step to cut it four times.

I have finished 8 and have 6 more ready to cutting. I have the pile of fabric at the top to still cut into.

I have linked up with Freshly Pieced

You should see the ice rain and then snow we are getting. Tomorrow is a snow day, the buses are not running so we do not go out. I will keep machine quilting. As I can get to work still.

WIP Wednesday Oct 31

I have been working on my Scrappy Log Cabins for Ellison Lane Quilt a Long. I finally have all my blocks done. I rescued  the red from the vacuum canister (it is the top right one). In the next few days I hope to sew the blocks together to make my top.

Some of my blocks have cute little critters in the center. Lots of scraps used up.

I also have my two Christmas table runners to finish up. They got machine quilted on Sunday but then I set them aside to quilt for customers on Monday morning. Maybe I can get them trimmed before I have to go Trick or Treating. I am taking my son out tonight for his last Halloween candy haul.

Lex found a stick to play with. It came out of the fire box. It is cool here and I hope we have a fire some time soon.

WIP Wednesday

Works In Progress Wednesday. It is a prefect fit for today. I am packing for a retreat this weekend. I have added this post to The Needle and Thread Network Blog and Freshly Pieced WIP Wednesday.

First is Adam's plaid quilt. I started it last winter and thought Adam and I would do it together, but he want just me to work on it now that all the fabric and the pattern is picked. I worked on it just a little so far.

All the cutting is done and now I need to sew lots of strip sets. A very good job for retreat. I will bring it home to put together on the design wall. I am sure there will not be room for a design wall at retreat.

Next up is Orca Bay. It is the mystery quilt of Bonnie Hunter's last Nov 2011. I hope to get the last few rows together and get most of the top done. The pattern is in her new Book String Fling.  Just a note she is doing another mystery this Nov again. I may have to do it again.

I have to make at least one table runner maybe three or four. So I am taking Christmas fabric with me. We will see if I get started. My family thinks I need to make a runner and mats for the table in a Christmas theme.  They like the pumpkin mats I made last week.

I am also thinking of a new project using my hand dyed fabric. This is just the blue, purple and green, I still have to dig out Pinks and oranges. You will have to wait to see what I do with this fabric.

WIP Wednesday Pumpkin Mats How to

I have been working hard at using my scraps up. The month of Sept was Orange for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2012. On Saturday I really wanted to make some Pumpkins, before the month ended. But into what? I got making six pumpkins and thought maybe place mats.

From my Orange 1 1/2" strips I made a 6 1/2" square. You would need 5 strips measuring 1 1/2" x 6 1/2".

Then the corners I used Purple scarps. Start with a 2 1/2" square one dark purple and one medium purple, and cut then on the diagonal once each.

I then pins the triangles to the orange square in each corner. Make sure that you have the tips of the triangles over lapping by at least a 1/4". Sew 1/4" from the bias of the triangle

The purple triangle should cover all of the orange corner. If you have it correct, trim off the orange corner and press. Trim up your pumpkin square again to 6 1/2".

For the stem I used 2 inch strips and free cut them with a little angle. make sure your three pieces have the same angle.

When sewing the angle, I just eyeballed the little 1/4" to hang over. Press and see if your new strip is straight enough to get by.

Add your stem to the top of your pumpkin. I like to keep the medium purple on the top. Yes I did some one with the stem on the dark end and ribbed to fix it.

I then sewed some purple 2 1/2" scraps to make up the frame parts. I quickly went to my longer strips and did strip piecing with my 2 " wide strips. I cut off 2 1/2" strip piecing at this time. I used all dark purple on the bottom. then the sides have a little shading to medium purple.

This block is now 8 1/2" wide and 8" tall. Not a great size to keep track of but I was being a little free at this time.

I made the word "Boo" with all yellow scraps that were 1 1/4" wide. I had all this yellow hand dyed in my scrap box and did not cut any extra. The B started with a 2" purple square for the top of the B and a 2" by 2 1/2" unit in purple. The O's started with a 1 1/2" by 2 1/4" purple unit. I then just added the yellow were needed. The top of B needs a little strip of purple, to make it as wide bottom. I added narrow strips between the letters and some purple on the top and bottom of the Os to make them as wide as the B. Lots of 1 1/2" purple strips were used to get what I needed and then I would trim of one was to big. I am sorry I did not take photos of the Boo in process.

To get both the Boo's and pumpkins together I added 2 " strips to the pumpkin top and bottom. the Boo's got 1 1/2" strips around it. I trimmed if one was to big.

There one place mat top done. It measures 12 1/2" tall and 17 1/2" wide. I thought that was a good size for my place mats. I can not lye I had to cut a few dark purple strips to finish the place mats off, but I used so much up. Now for some quilting these up.

I have added today's post to WIP Wednesday at Freshly Pieced  and Needle and Thread Network

Blogtocberfest is going on this month and I am going to make a creative post every day this month.
