Quilts for Boys

My Mom, Betty, and I often work on quilts together. These two where done by both of us. My mom did the patchwork and I did the machine quilting. I wanted to give my sister in laws two boys a quilt each. I had given them a baby quilt each but no new ones for years. You can see they are way to big now for baby quilts. They needed small man size at least.

This quilt I had an Oiler fabric (Edmonton's Hockey team) on part of the backing so we did make it more orange and blue. Both boys love hockey and their dad is a hockey nut. Some winter's dad has build a ring in their back yard.

Both quilts were done in time for the birthdays they had in Aug 2020. I am behind showing of stuff from last year when I hardly wrote on my blog.

Dog friends - I have not gone to the herding breed yet, the cattle dog is their dog.

Saturday Sunshine Yellow

My yellow wall so far this month, as we come to the end of the month. I might not have gotten a ton of yellow used up but I still have a pretty full design wall of stuff. So happy to finish up the pinwheel top. I have more pinwheels to use for the next baby quilt. Sister's choice and the square in a square blocks are done.

We are very sunny here today but a bit cold out. It is to warm back up for Monday March. In like a lamb, out like a lion.

I still need to do more. Many yellow strings ready to use still.

I have a small start on my log cabin blocks. They are still so tiny. Maybe today I can get more done on them. Many more rows to go around.

Hay did you here we get to work with Green for March! I have so much green! It really is a colour we use a lot of. To see what everyone is doing to finish up their Yellow go check out the links at Soscrappy

I sent this quilt in the mail yesterday. I am sending it a fire victim that lost everything including his agility dogs. What else do quilter's do but send a quilt like a big hug.

This quilt was made as a challenge from the Rainbow Scrap Challenge a few years ago. We were asked to use our Dark prints that were hard to fit in a colour. The pattern is from Karen of Griska Quilts.

2nd Yellow Scrap Saturday

I got the top together. I am so happy to finish the quilt top. It is a baby quilt and the baby is due in March. This is the first quilt top I have finished in the past 15 months. Yes, a long time for me. But I still have to quilt and bind it.

I used some 1 1/2" strings to do these blocks. I did 5 that started with a light yellow and finish with a darker yellow. then 5 the other way. so a total of 10 blocks. The blocks measure 7 1/5" unfinished size.

So my wall looks like this for now.

Nadine (my good Friend) is joining us with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2021. These are her yellow blocks she got done this week. She loves sunflower fabrics and has a few prints with yellow.

Nadine and I were zooming and sewing together on Sunday with a few of our local sewing friends.

I will add my post to the other yellow Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2021 over at Soscrappy.

I am taking a zoom class today called Creative Expressions workshop : Milagro with Dawn Piasta It is hosted by the Edmonton and District Quilter Guilds. I let you know how that goes. Sunday is also a class on Bojagi/ Pojagi or Modern Korean Patchwork.

Yellow Scrap Saturday

Sister's Choice blocks were the first to do on my yellow list of blocks. Some of the yellow triangles get kind of lost but maybe that makes the blocks sparkle more.

Then the next big one of the list was Yellow Pinwheels. I want to have a baby quilt done soon so I needed these.

I kept going and made more pinwheels, this time in Orange, Turquoise and Blue. So many Pinwheels.

Next was to lay out my blocks. I have this up on the wall ready to sew together. I am hosting a zoom sew day for the Edmonton and District Quilter's Guild today. I still get so sew.  Getting this top sewn together is my goal for the day. Then I will move on to more yellow.

Last Saturday I was still not done all my pink. I have been looking though all my blocks and seeing if I have some colours missing, or just need a few more blocks to lay out a top. I needed these 16 patch blocks in Pink, So I got 9 blocks done.

Then while I still had some pink on the wall, I added the last few blocks. Here is my final wall of Pink for January 2021. I also did 2 more sister choice blocks. I have no idea how many blocks I need to a sister's choice quilt.

Nadine's Blocks

My good friend, Nadine, has plans to follow along with us at the Rainbow Scrap Challenge this year. She has asked me to post her blocks on my blog for her. This past month she got two pink blocks done. One is Broken dishes, she chose this block because she has broken a few mugs and glasses this month.  I am so happy to have her join me in the adventure of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2021.

I will get this post linked up with Soscrappy. Check out what else everyone is working on.

Yellow Talking Turkey blocks

Yellow is the colour for the month of February with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2019.
I had many parts done for these blocks and now have them together. Not sure if I really want 5 yellow blocks in this quilt or not. I have no idea how many blocks I want in total.

Talking Turkey is block from Bonnie Hunter's String Fling quilt book.

So far I have 4 colour each with 5 blocks done. I know I need green for sure. Maybe more colours. I am worried that 5 blocks of each colour and How many colours could be to many blocks. These blocks are a bit bigger, like 14" or so. Maybe I am on my way to 2 smaller quilts. Not sure.

I have added this post to Soscrappy and the link party

Yellow 16 patches

The Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2019 is well under way. I have slowly been working on some yellow scraps. I do not have tons of yellow or do I have too many wholes in the blocks that yellow is needed. I needed these yellow 16 patches made using 2" squares. I have a few yellows that are almost brown. But they work in these little blocks.

I am planning to use some of these 16 patches mixed in with 6 1/2" sampler blocks. See how I can move from one colour to the next. I have not worked out all the design questions but here is a sample of what I am planning.

I needed blue 16 patch blocks and I know it is not blue this month, but I had it out. So I got them made. Part of my catching up on missing blocks. Maybe it will help me get some quilt tops done.

Here is the green sampler blocks and the yellow 16 and Blue 16 patches mixed together. They look good together.

I am a day late but I am adding this to the link up on Soscrappy and the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2019.

Scraps in Spring

I have been working on hexagons all winter long. I have plans to make a bag. I am close to having the 2 halves done. I will have to layer and quilt, so still lots to do.

I have gone to Quilt Canada in Vancouver BC this week. I packed a few more to baste and sew while I am away. I have a quilt in the National Juried show so I have to go check it out in person.

A big step on the string scrap quilt got done this week. I made my map of colours. I also have key as to how many blocks of the colours I need. So now it will be quicker to get to the sewing.

The yellow strings got done. Now with the key I can match up the other colour too.

I am a little behind. Yes, still on April's Yellow. I have so much more pink for May still to do. Now for June we are going Teal/Turquoise , love that colour and I have a lot of scraps in it.

I also did some 6" poverty piecing blocks too. I was close to getting some pink ones done but they are not ironed and ready for photos yet. Next week.

I will add this to Soscrappy's link when I get home.

Saturday Scraps

I worked hard this week to finish up my Yellow. Yellow was April's colour for the Rainbow scrap challenge. I do not have any string blocks but I got the rest done. Here is my big wall of yellow all together. Sampler blocks both 10" and 7 " blocks,  then pin wheels and to the far right is 6 migrating geese blocks. I love blending the colours on those blocks. Sometimes yellow was challenging to get the light to dark.

I have a few interesting yellow scraps. Love the little doggy.

My pin wheel blocks.

So I worked hard on my pink scraps. I cut and cut and trimmed and started to do some sewing. This block was I close as I got to having something to show you.
Pink is May's colour for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018. So much left to do.

Trimming many triangles up so I can do my sampler blocks.

I have added this post to Soscrappy's linky page.  I have had trouble with it so not sure if it is all working but give it a try.

More lined up for the iron. So I have lots on the go and should have more by next week. I hope to get a little time to sew on Mother's day. Then my mom and I are going to a quilt show together. Then supper together.

Sunny Saturday

I am at retreat! Hoping the sun is out. Late this week it was looking like spring and I got to wear my spring jacket

For retreat we were to made a Garlic Knot block. The blocks will be put together and then a name will be pulled from the hat and the winner will take all the blocks. I made my first one Yellow to go in the draw. I had my yellow scraps sitting out for the RSC 2018.

Well I made 10 blocks with yellow. I just wanted to keep going. These are so fun. The other blocks I will keep for myself.

I might not get the link done to Soscrappy this week but you can go see her site and more scrap ideas.

Well I made 40 more blocks. I guess I have started a new quilt. Ha Ha. Heading to retreat to finish some quilts and now I have another one to work on. I have a few scraps packed so I can make some even number of blocks and maybe get a top done.

Here are my blocks laid out a little differently.

I hope your Saturday is Sunny and Happy. I know I will enjoy retreat.

Sunny Yellow

I think today was to be our warmest day of the last few 6 months. We did see a bit of sun but we had some wind too. Lots of melting of snow but we still have lots of snow left. Wet and muddy all over. The horses are muddy brown in colour. Brown is kind of the real colour outside this month.

Yellow and Gold

Yellow is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2018 of the month.
I did a ton of sorting and trimming down my yellow scraps. The box is tidy and well sorted. I made all kinds of yellow triangles to use in my sampler blocks and then in pinwheels.

To see other yellow projects or the pattern for this block, check out SoScrappy

I got my 3 large 10" square sampler blocks done.

I then started to lay out the smaller block 7"square. I just did not get them sewn today. Maybe early next week.

Next weekend I have retreat.
So today I sorted my UFO projects.
I had trouble finding one I really wanted to take. Well at 5 pm I found it. Good! I can take it. I have a list with at least 6 projects. 4 are packed in there bags ready to go and one is a rainbow scrap challenge quilt I hope to finish the top on the weekend.
I also have plans for one new project. I still have to sort fabric for it. Maybe I will do some cutting for it this week.

Lime out Yellow in

My wall of lime green. I spend Sunday working on and fishing up all my lime green blocks. This is what I love the wall filled.

Five 6" poverty pieced blocks

Six migrating geese. The geese are back for a week now. Not sure they got the note that spring would be a month late this year.

Three 10" sampler blocks

12 pin wheel blocks. Love these little cuties.

Lime sting half blocks.

See some will have the other colour.

Yellow, I worked hard on my box of yellow. Cutting down some strips in the the smaller squares I need. Sorting and ironing and just a good old clean up. I will get some blocks of yellow done this week. I have linked up with Soscrappy and the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

Today I go to the Red Deer Quilt Show. So much fun. I got an invite to be driven so I have friends to go with too. Best got on the road.

Happy Canada Day

Happy Birthday Canada 150!

We have come to the end of June and Yellow. I got a little more done in yellow this week. I love to see all the blocks up and once. I think I forgot 2 but it is most of the yellow I did.

Some scraps were sitting on the table and needed to be something, so 6" crumb blocks.

I also got the triangle strings done this week.

Now on to Blue, so pretty Blue. I am sure I have lots to work on. I have linked up with Soscrappy, our leader in the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.
